BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — Wendy's confirmed 1,000 stores have been hit with security breaches targeting customers' payment card information, and 12 of the stores are in the Treasure Valley.
The restaurant was notified of suspicious activity in February 2016 and concluded in May that malware was installed on various point-of-sale systems. Wendy's says the cyber activity was used to obtain the cardholder's name, card number, expiration date, cardholder verification value and service code.
Investigators were able to disable it. Wendy's says investigators believe the malware was installed in the late fall of 2015.
The company asks the public to check the list of potentially impacted restaurants. If you think you have visited an affected Wendy's restaurant between the dates shown, call (866) 779-0485 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (CST) for fraud and restoration resources.
"We are committed to protecting our customers and keeping them informed. We sincerely apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced as a result of these highly sophisticated, criminal cyberattacks involving some Wendy's restaurants," said Todd Penegor, Wendy's President and CEO. "We have conducted a rigorous investigation to understand what has occurred and apply those learnings to further strengthen our data security measures."
Wendy's Company says they are working with federal law enforcement, forensic experts and the card industry to identify and stop the malware.
