With a singing career that spanned more than six decades, George Jones had one of the finest streaks in country music – having a string of classic hits throughout the ’60s and early ’70s.
However, in 1980, Jones reached a low point in life, both professionally and personally. Substance abuse – coupled with a troubled history of marriages and a fondness for missing shows – had wrecked the path of one of the most prolific country-hitmakers of all time. His few singles and albums then no longer have enough charm compared to some of his best.

Luckily, a song about one man’s steadfast affection for a past love came his way, and singlehandedly breathed new life into his career – and that’s no other than “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” The song did not only hit No. 1, but it also reignited his career, paving the way for a string of subsequent hits in the ’80s.
One of The Greatest Country Songs of All Time
At present, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is considered by many country fans and artists as the greatest country song of all time – this includes singer-songwriter, Jamey Johnson.
In an old clip we’ve found, which was recorded at the Lafayette Theater in Lafayette, Indiana, in 2016, Johnson apparently persisted in honoring one of country music’s all-time most renowned voices – pouring raw emotion as he sang “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” His admiration for the Possum is very evident in his tear-jerking performance.
The country music traditionalist was supposed to share the stage with George Jones for the country legend’s final 2013 Grand Tour, along with country stars Randy Travis, Lorrie Morgan, and the Charlie Daniels Band. Unfortunately, Johnson never had the chance to do so following Jones’ death just a few months before his final show was scheduled.
Still, we’re delighted that someone as talented as Johnson keeps Jones’ legacy alive. Tune in below and watch Jamey Johnson’s rousing performance of the iconic hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today.”
