The Rolex Paris Masters 2021 commenced at the start of November. The tournament is underway in Bercy, France. It is the ninth installment in the ATP Masters 1000 series because of which, it witnesses participation from the best ATP players. For all of them, it’s a last bid at boosting their rankings and qualifying for the prestigious ATP World Tour Finals, to be held in Turin, Italy.
The Paris Masters is a prestigious tournament. It was held for the first time 52 years ago, in 1969. This year marks its 49th edition. The Paris Masters evolved from the now defunct French Covered Court Championships. Until 1989, the tournament was organised in the Stade Pierre De Coubertin.
From 1989 onwards, the Accor Arena hosts this famed event. Between 1969-70 and 1986-2006, the event was played on a carpet surface. Between 1972-82, and from 2007 onwards, the matches have been played on indoor hard courts. Currently, it is the only Masters 1000 tournament that takes place in an indoor setup.
Only four players in history have the honour of winning both the Parisian titles, i.e the French Open and the Paris Masters: Ilie Nastase, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. This wondrous feat has even eluded Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who has almost single-handedly dominated Roland Garros since 2004. Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig have achieved the same honour in the doubles category.
