Pond No 1. at Ester Simplot Park has been closed by the City of Boise after blue-green algae was discovered Thursday.

Signs have been posted at the pond to notify visitors of the closure. Pond No. 1 is the larger of the two ponds at Esther Simplot Park and it includes the children’s beach area.

Boise Parks and Recreation made the call to close the pond out of caution. According to the city, this type of algae may produce toxins under the right conditions. All recreation in the pond is prohibited until further notice.

"The health and safety of our citizens is always our top priority, so the pond will remain closed to ensure visitor safety until testing is completed," said Boise Parks and Recreation.

The City of Boise says measures are being taken to eliminate a potentially harmful bloom. City of Boise’s Public Works Department is working with the Department of Environmental Quality to test and treat the water in Pond No. 1.

Blue-green algae that produce toxins are not uncommon in local ponds during the summer heat. This type of algae can be harmful to people and pets.

Dogs are no longer allowed at Quinn’s Pond or Esther Simplot Park, including ponds No. 1 and No. 2 and the previously designated dog off-leash area.

At this time, Esther Simplot Park Pond No. 2 and Quinn’s Pond remain open for recreational use.
