Julia Apostoli, mother of Stefanos Tsitsipas recently opened up on Roger Federer‘s retirement. Tsitsipas was part of Team Europe in the Laver Cup where Federer retired from professional tennis.
“The era is gone, sadly. But we managed to beat him – it’s good. If he had gone undefeated, it would have been a painful moment for us. I can’t say that I admire Federer. Of course, yes, I respect the court: his behaviour, and thinking.
“I understand that not everyone should and, most importantly, can like him. I understand it. But there is no need to discourage yourself either. We must still adhere to some moral principles: do not swear, do not show your excessive dissatisfaction, and maybe even disgust for the coach,” said Tsitsipas’ mother speaking with Russian outlet Champion AT.
Stefanos Tsitsipas grew up stanning Roger Federer
The Greek Superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas has always said that he grew up watching the Swiss Maestro and he is a fan of his. They first faced off in the Australian Open 2019 R16 when Tsitsipas defeated Federer in 4 sets. Their head 2 head is 2-2 now.
Tsitsipas is one of the few flag bearers of single-handed backhands which was one of the most artistic aspects of Federer’s game. Though tennis experts are pointing out the vulnerable aspects of playing with a single-handed backhand, many still admire it for its raw beauty.
Currently the World No.6, Tsitsipas has had a mixed year so far. He played 67 matches this year (49 wins, 18 losses) and won 2 titles (Monte Carlo ATP 1000, Mallorca ATP250) but failed to perform his best in the grand slam tournaments. His best run was at the semi-final at the Australian Open where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in 4 sets.
